Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the frequently asked questions.
If you have any other questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, we would love to hear from you.
  1. Which filling is better: tooth-coloured or amalgam?
Both material options are good and can serve patients equally well depending on their needs and circumstances. Amalgam, aka "silver filling", may not be suitable if you would like a natural looking filling. There are differences in the shape of the preparation as well. The tooth-coloured material relies on the bond to be held in the tooth, which makes the preparation very conservative. At the same time, the amalgam filling requires mechanical retention and internal lock to be able to stay in the tooth.
  2. Do I have to have regular re-care appointments?
Re-care appointments are very important. Early detection and prevention of gum disease and other dental problems will help to minimize the need for more expensive and invasive procedure later on. Re-care appointments are key to preventing small problems from becoming bigger ones!
  3. What is the "bite adjustment"?
There is an old saying in dentistry "Teeth wear like shoes". Improper bite, grinding and clenching, bad habits such as "nail biting" can all lead to a requirement for a bite adjustment. In certain cases, teeth may wear in an irregular pattern leading to complications that may require an adjustment.
  4. Is whitening harmful to my teeth?
According to the Canadian Dental Association, dental bleaching is safe and effective. We will provide the service after consultation and going through safety protocols with the dentist. We recommend that whitening be supervised by a trained dental professional.
  5. Why my teeth are sensitive?
There are many causes of teeth sensitivities and discomfort, which are a highly acidic diet, worn enamel, broken restorations, cracked teeth, grinding, a poorly placed 'high filling' and others. If you have sensitivities or/and discomfort, call us today and don't wait till it keeps you up all night.
